Indira Gandhi National Open University, the largest mega University of the World, was established by an Act of Indian Parliament in 1985 to democratize higher education. The aim was to provide cost-effective quality education to large sections of our population including those living in remote and far flung areas.
IGNOU is a pioneer in Distance Education system. It is a recipient of the Centre of Excellence award conferred by the Commonwealth of Learning. . Today, it serves the educational aspirations of nearly 2.6 million students in India and 36 countries through the twenty-one schools of Study and a network of 61 Regional Centres, more than 3,000 Learner Support Centres and around 60 overseas centres.
The University offers 350 Certificate, Diploma, Degree and Doctoral programmes, comprising around 1500 courses.
MADURAI REGIONAL CENTRE:
Madurai Sub-Regional Centre has been elevated to a full-fledged Regional Centre with re-defined geographical jurisdiction consisting 16 districts in the State of Tamil Nadu and the number of learner support centers has been increased to 94.
